Souvlaki

Vassilis Souvlaki Greek Taverna

Vassilis Souvlaki is somewhat of a landmark in Burnaby. It’s that Greek restaurant on Kingsway with the palm trees. That’s all you have to say. Everyone immediately knows which place you’re talking about. For me, it’s the Greek restaurant next to Phở Saigon…a long-time favorite Burnaby phở joint. Recently a colleague and original Friday Luncher retired. For his send-off luncheon he felt like some Greek food.

Vassilis has won the local newspaper reader poll for Greek food in Burnaby ten years in a row. For me, this is an ominous sign. Those polls aren’t usually the most trustworthy…nothing more than a free newspaper-reader’s popularity contest. Not exactly go-to guides of fine, local  cuisine. That being said, it’ll be interesting to see what the hype is all about.

X-Site Grill and Bistro

Having had a somewhat miserable lunch this past Tuesday, I decided on a spot that would be a guaranteed good meal. I’ve been visiting X-Site for several years and have always been amazed at the value and consistent quality. There is no other place (that I’m aware of) that serves up such sizable, delicious meals at such rock-bottom prices.

Every single one of these choices is a bargain. Since my first visit, about five years ago, the prices have stayed at the unbelievable price of $4.95. The only change in all that time has been the requirement of a beverage purchase. Speaking of beverages, the daily liquor specials are some of lowest prices in town. Who in the hell sells Double Martinis for $4.50? It’s just unheard of.

Of all the lunch specials, the one that really stands out is the Chicken Souvlaki.
