All-you-can-eat can oftentimes be a double-edged sword. Most of the time you may think you’re getting a good deal, but, more often than not, you wind up with several plates of crap. Every now and then, if you look hard enough, you can find value and a damn good buffet. At Kedah House you get both.
The highlight here is the Beef Rendang (lower right). Chunks of stewing beef are simmered in coconut milk and seasoned with a paste of ginger, garlic, kaffir lime leaves, tumeric, lemongrass, cinnamon, star anise and chillies.
Ayam Mesak Merah (Malay Red Chicken Curry). Fork-tender chicken drenched in a spicy tomato sauce jacked with chile, garlic, shallots and ginger.
A perfect accompaniment is Gado-Gado. You choose from cold vegetables, fried tofu, slices of egg and potato and then smother them in a garlicky peanut sauce.
Sambal Eggs. One egg served medium with a healthy dollop of chile-garlic sauce.
The Beef Rendang, Gado-gado and Sambal Eggs are all staples on this buffet. The noodle and chicken dishes vary. They may put out Mee Goreng or a Malaysian Chicken Curry. Regardless, it’s always exceptional.
On top of what I went over, there’s a curried vegetable daal, fresh salad, soup, coffee, tea and sometimes even dessert. The buffet is available Friday nights and all day Saturday & Sunday. At $9.99, you’d be hard-pressed to find an AYCE with this amount of freshness and variety of flavor.
